How to help drooping roses

A rose often droops because an air pocket or blocked stem stops water from reaching the head. Remove the rose from the arrangement, trim two or three centimetres from the base with a sharp diagonal cut, and place it immediately into fresh water.

Support the bloom loosely with paper while it hydrates in a cool room. Give it at least an hour before checking. Remove any damaged outer guard petals, but do not peel away healthy petals. If the stem feels soft or discoloured, separate it from the rest of the bouquet.

Quick tips

Cut again

Remove enough stem to expose a firm, clean interior.

Hydrate quietly

Let the rose drink in a cool room away from direct sunlight.

Remove only damage

Keep healthy guard petals because they protect the centre of the bloom.
