The right vase supports a bouquet without squeezing it. As a useful starting point, let the vase cover roughly one third to one half of the total stem length. Tall flowers need a narrow, stable base, while rounded hand-tied bouquets open more naturally in a wider vessel.
Before arranging, hold the bouquet beside the empty vase and trim gradually. If the flowers lean heavily to one side, the opening is probably too wide. If stems are crowded or crossed tightly, choose a larger opening so air can circulate and every stem can reach the water.
Quick tips
Tall stems
Use a weighted cylinder for delphiniums, gladioli, and branches.
Round bouquets
A medium, wide-mouthed vase lets roses and peonies settle naturally.
Small stems
Separate short or broken stems into bud vases instead of discarding them.
